Thai Bui
was born in Ha Noi in 1960. Following his arrival in the United States
in 1981, he earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1988
and an MFA from Stanford University in 1992. He has received several scholarships
in the visual arts and has taught sculpture at the University of California,
Santa Cruz.
Thai Bui's
sculpture combines seemingly disperate elements into harmonious compositions.
He reconfigures commonly recognizable objects into different forms: for
example bike tires at times resemble river rocks, at other times they
look like shadows of enormous spiders on walls, and at times they resemble
canon balls.
